I realize the last post was a little bit of a downer. But, I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t write about the good, the bad, and the ugly. If your goal is to become an airline pilot, you need to know that there will be ups and downs. After being home for a few days, the adventures of last Saturday morning have been forgotten. I am all ready to go out and enjoy my next trip.
So, I will share a quick lighthearted story. This came to mind the other day when the captain was checking the PA system in the cockpit. It is a required pre-flight check. Like 99% of other airline pilots, he picked up the handset, pressed the button, and said “test, test.”
There was a captain at my former airline that added a fun spin to the check. In today’s world of political correctness and accusations of harassment, I’m surprised he pulled it off unscathed. I flew many trips with him and the routine was always the same.
He would pick up the handset and announce “tickle, tickle” over the PA system. Since it was during the pre-flight routine, only the flight attendants, cleaners, or caterers were on board.
Most of the time it went ignored. Either the nobody heard it, or they didn’t care what he was saying. But, every so often someone would stick their head into the cockpit and inquire about the unusual announcement. The conversation always went like this:
Curious Flight Attendant (CFA): “What did you say on the PA?”
Non-politically Correct Captain (NPCC): “Tickle, tickle.”
CFA: “Tickle, tickle? What’s that all about?”
NPCC: “Two test tickles.”
If you’re not laughing yet, read it again out loud. Just make sure nobody can hear you.
